Donna Summer, Disco Queen, Dead At 63

New York, NY (Top40 Charts) Donna Summer, the multimillion-selling singer and songwriter whose hits captured both the giddy hedonism of the 1970s disco era and the feisty female solidarity of the early 1980s, died on Thursday at her home in Naples, Fla. She was 63.
The cause was cancer, her publicist, Brian Edwards, said.

Biography:

LaDonna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012), known by the stage name Donna Summer, was an American singer-songwriter who gained prominence during the disco era of the 1970s. She had a mezzo-soprano vocal range, and was a five-time Grammy Award winner. Summer was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the U.S. Billboard chart, and she also charted four number-one singles in the United States within a 13-month period.

Summer died on May 17, 2012. The Associated Press reports that she died in the morning at her home in Key West, Florida at age 63 following a battle with cancer. The Bradenton Herald quotes “Sarasota County records” stating that she lived in Englewood, Florida at the time of her death. The reference did not state the place of her death.

Summer was born Ladonna Adrian Gaines on December 31, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts to parents Andrew and Mary Gaines and was one of seven children. She and her family were raised in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. Her father, Andrew Gaines, was a butcher, and her mother Mary, was a schoolteacher. Summer’s mother later recalled that from the time she could talk, Summer would often sing: “She literally loved to sing. She used to go through the house singing, singing. She sang for breakfast and for lunch and for supper.”

Olympus OM-D E-M5

OM-D E-M5 Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm Lens (Black)

The Olympus E-M5 is more than just a pretty face. It matches classic style with fast auto focus, a full feature set and great hardware like a built-in EVF. It’s costly, but it’s likely to please photographers of any skill level.
Pros
Good images and video
DSLR-like feature set
Compact, stylish form factor

Cons
Costly body-only configuration, grip and lenses add expense
A 2x crop factor doesn’t lend itself to wide angle shooting

Olympus OM-D E-M5 Full Review: A Classic Revived

olimpus_OMDE_M15Back in the mid-1970s, I became intrigued with photography and my roommate at the time had a 35mm Minolta SLR he was gracious enough to lend me to explore this newfound interest. Once I was hooked, I started examining the market for a camera of my own, and two other friends were kind enough to let me play with their cameras – a Nikon F and Olympus OM-1, respectively. The size difference could not have been more profound between the big Nikon and diminutive Olympus. Canon got into the mix as well, but when the dust settled, I went with Nikon and never looked back. Approaching 40 years later, we’re all shooting digital; my Nikon D3S is still big and Olympus is still making diminutive cameras.

Brownout worsens in Davao Sur town

Residents of Davao del Sur suffer most the brunt of the power deficiency, especially that brownouts seem to be more often that the scheduled ones by the Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative (DASURECO).

In this town alone, the scheduled weekly brownout on Wednesday that was supposed to start at 6 p.m. happened as early as 4:30 p.m. and lasted for over three hours. The brownout happened again the following day, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Business establishments and even ordinary residents were pointing fingers at DASURECO for not announcing earlier the supposed brownout so that they can still have the time to prepare to avoid back jobs and work-related priorities.

DASURECO is scheduling a rotating brownout at least once a week in selected areas all over the province after the National Power Corp. announced power generation deficiency in Mindanao Grid, most particularly from hydroelectric plants.

The situation reportedly prompted the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) to resort to power load curtailment of electric cooperatives in Mindanao, including DASURECO.

According to Godofredo Guya, DASURECO general manager, the rotating brownouts may extend beyond 9 p.m. but might not affect all of the areas specified in the schedule depending upon the advice of NGCP.

“Should there be new developments in the generation deficiency, the public will be duly notified through written noticies and mass media,” Guya said in a public announcement last month.

But he failed to explain the successive brownouts in Magsaysay since it did not happen to other areas of the province.

Attorney General to participate in Abilene town hall meeting

Attorney general to join town hall meeting

ABILENE — Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt will be in the Visitors Center Auditorium of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum at 7 p.m. April 17 for a Kansas Town Hall meeting.

The public is invited to attend.

Schmidt will speak about current issues of the Attorney General’s office.

For three days at the end of March, Schmidt was in the gallery as justices of the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments for and against the Affordable Care Act. Kansas and 25 other states are challenging the constitutionality of the health reform law on two fronts: its requirement that virtually everyone purchase health insurance and the law’s expansion of Medicaid, the health care program for the poor and disabled.

Schmidt became Kansas’ 44th Attorney General on Jan. 10, 2011. Before being elected Attorney General, he served 10 years as a Kansas senator representing the 15th District in southeast Kansas. During his last six years in the Senate, he served as majority leader for the Republican caucus. He also worked in private practice with an Independence law firm.
